Welcome to Chicago's Millennium Park Zen Meditation Group. Every Wednesday afternoon, across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park's Cloud Gate, we meet for zazen and discussion of mindfulness, meditation and zen practice.
We are affiliated with Ryumonji Zen Monastery near Decorah, Iowa. Ryumonji is a Soto Zen temple where monks and lay people practice together in traditional Zen manner. Its abbot is Rev. Shoken Winecoff, a dharma heir of Dainin Katagiri Roshi.
Ryumonji means "dragon gate temple" in Japanese, and the name comes from a legend that ordinary fish who swim through a particular set of waves and rocks in the ocean (like the picture behind this page!) are immediately changed into dragons.
We feel that zen practice and meditation is indeed transformative. Far from turning us into someone else, though, zazen is a way of coming home, of finding and expressing our true nature. The transformation inherent in zen practice is realized in the willing encounter with exactly what is.
